So when we heard about the work Danielle Hark promotes, we just knew we had to interview her for our blog. A mental health advocate, Danielle has written extensively for the Huffington Post about how taking and viewing beautiful photos can help deal with mental illnesses.

According to Danielle, art therapy is a valuable tool for emotional well-being. Taking and viewing photos can help you de-stress, relax and take your mind off thoughts that cause anxiety.

In our second in the series of interviews, we asked Danielle how viewing photos on a beautiful display on your smartphone or tablets can reduce stress in your life. Here is an excerpt from the interview.

Viewing media on smartphones is increasing rapidly. People of all age groups are joining the bandwagon, even young toddlers. How do you think this affects the mental well-being of these smartphone users?

I think photography can be a helpful tool for people of all ages who are experiencing mental health issues. Viewing photos can be a hopeful reminder of positive times and memories, which can be inspiring for people who are in dark places. Photos can also create the feeling of a calming oasis even for someone in a stressful situation. On a personal note, I have found that phone photos and videos can calm my toddler at times. She especially loves scrolling through photos on my iPhone, and pointing out vacations, family members, and her friends. I don’t let her play with it all the time, but when I do, it inevitably makes her smile.

Do you think the way photos are presented on smartphones can have a positive impact on the mind or be inspirational?

Photos that are viewed in a beautiful fluid display can have a positive impact on mental health. Photos can be used to help people de-stress. One way to do that is by uploading nature photos, and meditating while viewing them. With smartphones, this type of meditation is possible anywhere, even in a bathroom or your car.

How much of an influence does mobile photography have on your daily life? Has it altered your need for a digital camera?

I love taking photos, whether that is with my iPhone, my digital SLR, or even a toy camera, I simply love it. The iPhone has made it easier to take photos every day because it is always with me. I still bring my big camera with me if I am going somewhere fun or to an event, but my iPhone will be there too. The benefit of photography goes beyond the quality of the finished product, so the camera is secondary. It is really about the process of taking the photos and viewing them. For me, photography is a creative outlet, a way to express what is going on inside of me. Sometimes it helps me to be more present in a situation, while other times it can help me escape. Unless I am shooting for a professional job, a smartphone will often do the trick.

Danielle Hark is a wellness writer, professional photographer, and freelance photo editor. She is also a mental health advocate, and founder of BrokenLightCollective.com, the online photography gallery for people living with, or affected by, mental illness. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues, her mission is to help as many other people who are struggling, using photography and creativity whenever possible.

Tips for beautiful food photography: An interview with Nicole Cook

You already know Cooliris strives to create a beautiful visual experience every time you browse photos on your iPad and iPhone. But in order to get the most sublime experience, it makes sense the photos themselves should be beautiful and expressive, too.

To help you take the best photos, the Cooliris team is interviewing people who use photography in their daily lives and whose advice can help build your photography skills.

First in our interview series is the famous food blogger Nicole Cook. Her blog Daily Dish Recipes attracts thousands of people interested in recipes, stunning food photos, menu planning, and even growing your own food. With over 20 years of web experience, Nicole shares her tips on how to photograph food in a way that delivers the best visual experience for all your senses.

Food styling and composition are essential when taking photos for a food blog. What tips would you consider the most useful for improving the quality of food photos?

For starters, use natural light whenever possible. It will keep you from needing to do too much editing. Also, Adobe Lightroom is the best editing program out there. Period. With styling, remember that less is more. Sometimes just the food item in the photo can look gorgeous all by itself. Also stay away from distracting backgrounds, colors and other things that can detract from the food itself. Use ingredients as food props too. They are simple and help to “show” the recipe.

Do you feel photos are able to capture and convey the real essence of your recipes, from their aromas to their flavors?

I do think it is possible to create an emotion in a photograph that conveys the aroma or flavor of a recipe. However, I don’t see photography like that very often. I am still definitely learning how to make that come to life in the photograph.

How many shots does it take you, on the average, to get the one perfect shot that you’re looking for?

I usually shoot anywhere from 5-10 photographs at any one session of any one food item. Obviously some recipes require more. Often they are the same shot multiple times with slight movement or with a background change.

According to you what would you consider to be the best lighting and ambiance for food photography?

Natural lighting, absolutely. Cloudy days are my very favorite and when I know we are expecting major cloud coverage, I am often in the kitchen baking and cooking that whole day to take advantage of it.

Which image would you consider to be your best shot? What is the story behind it?

I’m not really sure if I have a “best shot” or which one it would be. I do have one that I really love. (I attached it—titled Blood Orange Marmalade). The story behind it: I was asked to review a cookbook and make a recipe for my blog. I was reviewing the cookbook with several better-than-me-at-photography bloggers. At the time, I did not have a lot of props or backgrounds, so I was frustrated because I was worried I wouldn’t be able to match their photography level or make the recipe look good. I took my own advice and went with the less is more thing, simply showing the jar of marmalade with a spoon, used all natural lighting on a slightly cloudy day and I actually just used a simple rustic piece of wood as the background. I love that photograph. I don’t know if it’s my best shot, but it’s certainly my favorite photograph.

What are your most and least favorite types of food to photograph?

Casseroles and anything out of the crock pot are my least favorable things to photograph. It is difficult to make those types of recipes look pleasant or appealing. I love to photograph salads, fresh foods are easiest and most colorful. Dips are easy, appetizers are easy so it’s fun to style them. I love to photograph drinks and smoothies because they are fun to style and dress up.

How often do you use a smartphone to take pictures for your food blog?

I will occasionally include a photo I may have taken for Instagram if there is a reason to. I use a DSLR camera for all my blog photography.

We, at Cooliris thank Nicole for taking time out to share her tips with us. Watch this space for more interviews coming up soon

Aptly titled BeLaunch 2013, this conference aims to revolutionize the start-up and technology scene in South Korea. We were honored to receive an invitation to be part of this platform that aims to change the technology ecosystem in South Korea.

Drawing on a breadth of experience, our CEO, Soujanya Bhumkar will happily share his wealth of knowledge about start-ups with South Korean enthusiasts. He is delighted at the thought of sharing his vision to help other entrepreneurs fulfill their dreams. He will be speaking on May 2, 2013, day 2 of the conference, on “Disruptive Asian Entrepreneurs – Cracking the Silicon Valley Code.” Some questions that will be covered in the panel discussion are:

Why does Silicon Valley attract entrepreneurial talent from all over the world, including Asia?

Why should entrepreneurs from Asia consider moving to Silicon Valley?

What challenges do Asian entrepreneurs face in the Silicon Valley?

How can entrepreneurs get started in the Silicon Valley? (Best practice examples)

The conference aims at grooming South Korean tech talent to go global, and also provides a platform for foreign start-ups to enter South Korea. His words are sure to help you if you are looking to gain insight into the start-up scene in the Silicon Valley or are looking to begin your own start-up anywhere in the world.

If you happen to be in Seoul on May 2, 2013, be sure to attend BeLaunch 2013 and hear our CEO speak. It takes place at COEX, Gangnam, Seoul.

Behind the scenes: Office prank on Lucy

Silly String went on sale last week and the timing could not have been better. Our teammate Lucy had just returned from Germany and it happened to be her birthday to boot. So we just had to surprise her.

After a slew of secret meetings, we hatched our plan. All that was required were 12 volunteers and a whopping 24 cans of Silly String.

The idea was simple: Cover her in layers and layers and layers of Silly String as soon as she walked in through the office doors. And that is exactly what we did.

Once we started spraying, we just couldn’t stop! Take a look yourself:

Welcome back and happy birthday, Lucy!

Randy Komisar on selective sharing and the future of personal media

With the power to connect with people anywhere and anytime at your fingertips, you face the question of what, how and with whom you want to share. This is especially true when sharing private content like photos. You want to be in control. And that’s exactly where selective sharing plays a pivotal role.

“Pictures are an important way to capture your passions, and share with them other people,” says Randy Komisar, general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. “Those people are people who mean something to you, which means they are not everybody….That’s why selectivity is important in sharing.”

In a recent interview, Komisar talks about the growth of personal media and how it is integrated into our daily lives, and why selective sharing is needed more today then ever.

According to Komisar, the future of personal media lies in the coming together of media and communications and how we share them.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Last week we asked our users to submit their #coolearth photos to us via Instagram and Twitter. We received a number of photos that highlight the beauty of our planet and how we personally interact with nature around us.

While we marvel at the beauty of our planet, we also need to be mindful of activities that harm the earth. We received a haunting picture from @tosinamida from Ibadan, Nigeria, who caught an image of a drain filled with plastic bottles, akin to a disastrous landfill. The message the user sent with the picture states: “practices like this cannot continue if we are to remain sustainable”.

Remember to celebrate the spirit of Earth Day today and every day, and vow to do all as we can to protect the precious planet we live on.

Media meets communication: Cooliris CTO speaks at ChinaBang 2013

Cooliris CTO Austin Shoemaker was in Beijing last week to speak at ChinaBang 2013, an annual conference on the start-up ecosystem in China.

To an international audience composed of engineers, business managers, and journalists, Austin spoke about the need to further bridge the gap between media centric apps and broadcast apps, where you take photos, stylize them and broadcast them to a vast audience.

Today, the need is answered only in part by chat applications, where media can be shared in a private sphere. But the limitation with chat apps is that they are linear, allowing you to only share one thing at a time.

Austin described how the new Cooliris app provides a solution to fill this divide, where you can share media in smaller groups and in a private context. He explained how Coolris combines media and communication into a unified experience across both private groups and public social networks.

In his words, “We add a personal layer to social media networks”. Cooliris aggregates all your media into one library, organizes it by context, and helps you share it with your specific audience.

ChinaBang is organized by Technode, one of the biggest names in tech media in China.

“I want people to present something that has value to me. And that means selection,” says Robert Scoble. The renowned tech blogger shared his thoughts with us on the growing importance of selective sharing and keeping one’s public and private profiles in control. Often you end up asking yourself lots of questions before you post to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

What image of yourself are you building when you post personal media to the public? What will people think about it? What will their thoughts be? Will it probably come back to you at some point in the future?

We posed these questions to Scoble and this is what he had to say. “For most people, it’s about control. For me, I just want to signal the system who should see that picture. If you want to see my baby photos, you can see them, but I don’t waste your time if you’re not interested… . So, selective sharing matters a lot.”

With the new Cooliris, the power to choose is with you. You decide who to share your photos and conversations with. The tide is changing and selective sharing is soon becoming the new norm.

And this is how we show our appreciation for all the support they have given us; by honoring them all with a post on our website. And of course, for our readers, to find the news about Cooliris all in one place.
As the world prepares for the ominous ides of March, we here quite enjoyed the popularity this month brought for us. At the outset was an epic article written by Robin Wauters titled:

“ Here are 600 million reasons to replace the Photos app on your iPad with Cooliris”

Writing for TheNextWeb, Wauters summarizes the Cooliris journey and the milestones it has achieved on the way. In fact it was a great compliment to read that he has replaced the Photo’ app on his iPad. In his own words, “ I’ve replaced the Photos app on my iPad 2 to see if it’s an adequate alternative, and was pleasantly surprised” . The best part is the article was shared 4784 times so far. You can read the rest of what Wauters said about us here:

http://thenextweb.com/apps/2013/03/07/cooliris-ipad-app-stats/

But it wasn’t all play at the Cooliris HQ, as our team headed by CEO Soujanya Bhumkar left for a tour to Asia. First on their itinerary was the bustling Japanese city of Tokyo. Cooliris being super popular in Japan, with our second highest downloads coming from there, it was no surprise how responsive the tech media was to us. One of the most popular tech writers in Japan, Techdoll, tweeted about us to her thousands of followers and Techwave Japan organized an interview with our CEO and other editors. Rick Martin of the ever popular Start-up Dating Japan had this to write after a sit-down with Soujanya;

“ Catching up with the CoolIris team in Tokyo” http://www.startup-dating.com/2013/03/cooliris-japan

Next stop was the effervescent South Korea. The media was buzzing with the idea of interviewing the Cooliris team. Each media outlet contacted was eager to send their reporters for a meeting with the Cooliris team. Language was not a barrier, it was their enthusiasm that made for excellent press. The first morning our team was met by the popular ZDNet, whose article can be found here:

http://www.zdnet.co.kr/news/news_view.asp?artice_id=20130313160632&type=xml

Korea’s number one IT Trade paper, The Electronic Times, also featured Cooliris

http://www.etnews.com/news/contents/internet/2734535_1488.html

It was a busy morning with Korea’s number one Economic Paper, The Maeil Economic Newspaper had their time with the team as well:

http://news.mk.co.kr/newsRead.php?year=2013&no=191381

Known as one of Korea’s most popular tech news sites, Bloter.Net also took the time out to meet with our team

http://www.bloter.net/archives/146718

It was a busy first day, but there was no stopping the media in Korea. The next day, Korea’s oldest and largest English news publication, The Korea Times, sat down for an interview with our CEO:

http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/people/2013/03/178_132064.html

It has been a great few weeks for Cooliris in the media and we humbled by the coverage we have gotten, especially from across the shores. It just gives us the impetus to work harder and come out with ever cooler updates for everyone to enjoy.

Guess what! It is mainly recipes on how to cook with beer. Since we are all about sharing, and it’s St. Patricks Day weekend, we want to digress from our usual topics and share the food experience of this St. Patricks Day with you.

Splashes of green hues, shamrocks, Ireland and beer; all synonymous for the day most people around the world eagerly await. March 17th is celebrated as St. Patrick’s day, a day full of feasting and revelry. Parades and festivals are not only held in Ireland but as far away as Argentina as well. The day has now evolved into celebrating everything ‘Irish’, especially their beer. Front runner for Irish Ales, Guinness, uses this day as the focus of its marketing strategy with St. Patrick’s Day events worldwide. But where can you find most of the population on St. Patrick’s Day? The answer is simple, flocking around an Irish pub.

Charles M. Madigan quipped, “St. Patrick, one of the few saints whose feast day presents the opportunity to get determinedly whacked and and make a fool of oneself all under the guise of acting Irish.” That however, does not seem like the only way to enjoy beer on St. Patrick’s Day, cook up a feast using the favorite ingredient of this holiday;beer. A good beverage to use while cooking as it includes ingredients that we use on a daily basis; grains, herbs, water and yeast. In order to help you decide, I have compiled a list of the top 5 things to cook with beer on St. Patrick’s Day.

1. Beer Batter

Famously found in the pubs of England and Ireland, beer battered fish and squid top the list. Drowned with a pint, beer battered seafood is one of the pillars of British gastro-pub cooking. Simple enough to make yet crispy and flavorful for a fun night out. Just whisk together 1 1/2 cup of flour, salt, pepper and 1 tbsp olive oil, then slowly add 2 cans of beer while stirring. Once mixed, carefully fold in 4 egg whites till combined. Your beer batter is ready. Just dip the seafood of your choice or even onions thoroughly in the batter and fry. Crispy beer battered snacks will be ready in under 10 minutes.

2. Beer Bread

Best eaten hot and straight out of the oven. The aroma that will fill your house would be enough to make your stomach rumble and devour the bread. The idea behind beer bread is straightforward, just substitute some of the liquid ingredients for beer. Add a can of beer with 2 beaten eggs to your dry mixture (2 cups bread flour, 2tbsp sugar, 2 tbsp baking powder and 2 tsp salt). Mix well and knead on a lightly floured surface. Grease your loaf pan and pour the bread mixture evenly. Bake the bread for about an 1 hour at 375f. Let it cool before serving. Pat it with butter or eat on its own, a great use for the leftover beer in the fridge.

3. Beer Can Chicken

It is one of the most popular barbecue recipes in the world. It can either be cooked on a charcoal grill or in the oven. If cooking on the charcoal grill, soak the woodchips in beer too for extra aroma. If cooking in the oven, discard half the beer from the can and make holes on top of the can for the liquid to steam. Cover your chicken with your favorite barbecue dry rub and place it upright, resting on the beer can in the roasting pan. Roast for about 2 hours at 275f and carve after about 15 minutes. Soft, succulent chicken boasting a full-bodied aroma will leave your palate asking for more.

4. Beer Puffs

Another snack to serve with drinks, especially your favorite Ale or Stout are beer puffs. These mini puffs can be stuffed with any filling of your choice, vegetables, tuna, chicken or even a mixture of them all. Melted cheese over these puffs also turns into a delicious appetizer. Heat a stick of butter with 1 cup of beer. As the butter melts add 1 cup flour, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp pepper and 1 tsp red chilli powder. Mix well for about 5 minutes. Add 4 eggs one at a time, whisking after every addition. Spoon the mixture onto the baking sheets in round balls and bake for 15-20 minutes at 350f. Let them cool and either add the stuffing on the top or slice the puff through and place it in the middle. Easy party snacks for St. Patrick’s Day

5. Irish Stew with Beer

No St. Patrick’s Day celebration can be complete without an Irish dish on the menu. Hence, its appropriate to mention their traditional dish, Irish Stew, albeit with beer. Cook 1 1/2 lbs of chopped beef in two batches. Once browned in oil, set aside the meat. Simmer 1 bay leaf, 1 tsp dried thyme, 1 tsp dried rosemary and 2-3 star anise in 4 cups of chicken stock for an hour. Lower the heat and add 4 chopped potatoes, 1 diced onion,3 sliced carrots, salt, pepper, 1 cup beer/ale and the meat. Cover and cook till the potatoes are tender. Add cornflour if you want to thicken the stew but I prefer it to be soupy. Serve it with beer bread and eat like the Irish do.

A lot has been said about cooking with beer; never cook with beer you cant drink, the less you boil beer the more flavorful the dish and use beer in any recipe by substituting it with the liquid ingredients. But the main point always seems to be left out. Drink the beer while cooking with it and enjoy.
Being a photo app company means that we’re constantly taking photos everyday. Here are 5 questions that you can ask yourself when you are capturing photo memories to make them even better, before you share them in Cooliris afterwards! ;)

1. What story are you telling?

Before you take your photo, it is very important that you have a clear idea what you want to show in the photo. What is your goal with the shot? What do you want to capture and deliver to people viewing the photo? Is there something that you want to discuss while showing the photo? Keep this in mind and it will help you with the right framing and composition of the photo.

2. What is the background and foreground?

This is important for your composition. If you want to point out an object in the foreground, like in a portrait shot, make sure your background is not distracting from that. If your background is very colorful or attention-grabbing, a tilt-shift or depth of field filter may help in defocusing the background. Here is how to do it with Instagram.

3. Do you have enough light?

With phone cameras, this can be especially tricky when there is not enough light. Make sure you have a main source of light that is strong enough to light up your subject. In low light situations, stabilize your camera to make sure your shot doesn’t get blurry.

4. What is the best time for an outdoor shot?

The best outdoor shots with phone cameras are usually taken during sunrise or sunset. Since the light is smoother during that time, it gives your subject the best exposure. During noon the sun is very high, so your subjects will look washed out and flat. Also, the shadows will have high contrast.

5. Are the lines straight?

If you are taking landscape shots, make sure the horizon is not sloping. With the iPhone camera you can activate grid view to help, which you find in the camera screen under “Options”.

Once you take your great shot, you’ll probably want to share it with people who share your passion or the memories you captured. For that, we can provide you the best solution – the Cooliris app. :)

Счастливые просмотра

Twitter and Smugmug make their way into the Cooliris family

2012 ended with a promise that the next year would bring more joy to our users. Keeping in mind our new year resolution, we begin 2013 with a bang. 2012 saw the Cooliris app soar to unprecedented heights in its short 4 month tenure. In just a few months we gathered the biggest names in social networking under the Cooliris umbrella. Helping our users store and share their photographs with ease, we garnered facebook, flickr, google+, picasa, google drive and China’s Renren as our sources. With the click of a button, photographs from all these sources could be shared and stored via the Cooliris app. As 2013 begins, so does our journey. We continue from where we left off and once again for our users, we have managed to add one of the biggest social networking sites as part of our growing family; Twitter.

With over 500 million registered users, generating more than 340 million tweets daily, twitter has been counted as one of the top ten most visited sites on the internet. With photographs, either personal or professional making up a big chunk of the tweets, Cooliris has now made it easier for all twitter users to store and share their photographs all in one place. With the advent of version 2.4 of Cooliris, no photograph will ever be lost in twitterverse again. All pictures that have been posted to your twitter account will safely find their way into your Cooliris app.

The good news just doesn’t stop there. Cooliris version 2.4 has another surprise in store for you; the addition of Smugmug as a source. Famous for its photo-sharing and printing capabilities, Smugmug has fast made its name in the online world. Helping to bring the photographer out in everyone, Smugmug has rapidly gained importance in the online photo-sharing arena. With the new Cooliris version, all your photographs stored on Smugmug will be available at your fingertips via the Cooliris app.

Constantly adding new sources at a riveting pace; that is our motto for 2013. We strive to make a wholesome photographic experience for all our users, making sure no photograph is ever lost. And if you thought our surprises would end with version 2.4, wait and see what we have in store for you with version 2.5. All we can say is that is akin to a “giant leap for mankind”. :)
