Cooliris is all about giving you a super-smooth experience when you’re browsing the web. That’s why in our newest incarnation, version 1.11, we’ve changed the way Cooliris interacts with you in some really fundamental but really important ways.

MULTITASKING (OR, HOW TO DO 10,000 THINGS AT ONCE, IN STYLE)

Let’s face it, we’re all busy people, and we probably have the shortest attention spans in the history of mankind. Never is this more apparent than in our web navigation habits, when we’re trying to juggle work, social networking, entertainment, finances, and news updates. Sometimes there’s blinking between all of those tasks. Sometimes there isn’t.

In light of this, the Cooliris experience now scales to your level of immersion. Full-screen is now an option rather than a default, allowing you to make Cooliris your centerpiece or just another window.

A big change is that Cooliris now features tabbed browsing. This enables you to run multiple instances of the app, and lets you jump freely between Cooliris, other tabs, and desktop programs such as email clients and iTunes. You can even run it in the background as a music player, cycling through your favorite music videos while you work.

A URL FOR EVERY OCCASION, AND CONTENT SHARING!

With Cooliris available in tab, there’s now a URL for any item or Wall of content. What does this mean?

– Set a 3D Wall view as your homepage to have your favorite photo and video search results and all the latest news and entertainment right at your fingertips, every time you fire up your browser!

– Bookmark single items or an entire Wall to your browser, so you can quickly relocate photo albums from your local computer drive or photo sites such as Flickr.

– Even share your 3D Wall with friends by giving them its URL.

Sharing your 3D Wall is super easy. Here’s how to give it try: (1) View a Wall of public content as you normally would; (2) copy its unique URL from your browser’s address bar; and (3) paste it anywhere you’d like, such as in your blog post or email, Twitter, Facebook, you name it. When your friends or readers click the link, they will see your Wall in Cooliris (or be prompted to download Cooliris if they don’t already have it).

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

For Flickr aficionados, Cooliris now allows all photos on a single Wall to be complete with title, author, description, and tags, and can jump between sets and pools. And on MySpace, you can now enjoy photos from any page in a streaming content wall.

There’s a whole set of new interface revamps as well, giving you smoother, more apparent scrolling and niftier navigation options.

Our brand new version 1.11 is now available at www.cooliris.com for Firefox (Windows, Mac, Linux) and Internet Explorer. A beta version for Safari (Mac) is also available. Below is a quick video run-through of how you can start using Cooliris v1.11. Enjoy!

Palo Alto, CA – June 2, 2009 – Today, Cooliris announced that NVIDIA is using the Cooliris Wall to demonstrate its revolutionary 3D Vision experience at Computex 2009, one of the largest technology fairs in the world. NVIDIA 3D Vision® is the world’s first high-definition 3D stereo solution for home entertainment. Merging the two technologies, the Cooliris Wall was unveiled in true 3D for the first time, making it possible for users to enjoy their favorite media on a real three-dimensional wall.

NVIDIA 3D Vision combines high-tech wireless glasses, a high-power IR emitter, and advanced software that works exclusively on GeForce® GPUs to generate visual experiences in full stereoscopic 3D — transforming traditional games, videos, and photos into a wholly immersive, multi-dimensional experience.

“We are excited to be coordinating closely with NVIDIA on providing consumers with a thrilling 3D experience,” says Marc Shedroff, Head of Distribution and Content Partnerships at Cooliris. “The Cooliris application fits naturally with NVIDIA’s new 3D Vision technology, and enables users to enjoy the awesome content that they have grown accustomed to in a revolutionary way in Cooliris.”

By combining the NVIDIA 3D Vision technology with the Cooliris application, users can see the Cooliris Wall of media as if it has real depth going into their computer screen. When they select images to be enlarged, the images appear to seamlessly pop out of the screen, giving the illusion that an infinite world of images is at their fingertips. This enables Cooliris users to dive deeper into online news, photos and videos, social networks, and other media content as if it were floating right in front of them.

“NVIDIA 3D Vision technology is the perfect platform for showcasing just how cool the Cooliris application really is,” says Ujesh Desai, vice president of GeForce GPU business at NVIDIA. “Their flexible and dynamic interface when combined with NVIDIA 3D Vision technology creates a powerful experience that enables the user to consume rich media in a new and stimulating way.”

Hi guys,

I’m Dima, and I joined Cooliris four months ago after working at Google for a year. I’ve always thought that Cooliris was a great program, but was disappointed that I couldn’t actually use it on my own Linux machine. This got me motivated to do a side project to enable Cooliris for Linux, even though I’m technically a backend engineer.

Now, after a fun three months of wrangling with Linux and working hard to make Cooliris perform on as many distributions as possible, we now have a Linux version of Cooliris that is shipping with our 1.10 release! Try it here and let me know what you think. You can learn more about system requirements at the bottom of this post.

It was a fun challenge to make it work reliably on every possible distribution, with every video card, every window manager, and so on. Quite a few times, I’ve had to rely entirely on users’ feedback because I did not have the same hardware and could not reproduce the problems that users ran into. Working around Linux bugs was a challenge, too: even though they were not Cooliris bugs, I still had to find a way around since blaming Linux wouldn’t be very helpful, and we wanted everyone to have a great experience.

Here are some system requirements:

A recent Linux distribution.

Ubuntu 8.04, Fedora 10, OpenSuse 11 should work.

Hardware-accelerated graphics. Without hardware acceleration, Cooliris should still run, but will be unusably slow.

NVidia cards with proprietary drivers (version 173 and above) have been tested and function well

ATI cards have been tested and work with the latest fglrx driver

Intel integrated cards function but with issues

To test hardware acceleration, run “glxgears” in full screen and see if it runs smoothly

Firefox 3

Flash 10 or higher. If you’re using a 64-bit Linux, we recommend that you install a pre-release version of 64-bit Flash.

See the support page for more information about specifications and support.

If you’re coming out with your 10th release, you gotta be sure to make it count. We’ve been putting in a lot of late nights around here making sure that Cooliris version 1.10 comes with great new features that will majorly impact your experience.

In the past, Cooliris has allowed you to browse and search popular websites like Google Images and Youtube, as well scan images from the latest news headlines. Now, check out these new additions:

View Photos from Your Computer

Up until now Cooliris has been an almost exclusively online experience. Now you can search through the My Computer icon and be able to access any of your image galleries in Cooliris, wherever they’re hiding – your Hard Drive, Desktop, iPhoto, My Pictures, et cetera!

Get the Full Facebook Album Experience

We’ve completely rewritten how we interact with Facebook. Now when you’re browsing your friends’ photos on the streaming 3D Wall, they’ll be complete with title, tags, and more. When someone’s tagged in a photo, you can click through to visit all their tagged photos. Now your Facebook image navigation is every bit as versatile as the browser experience, with a more fluid interface.

Context Is Everything - Get the Whole Story

Cooliris now supplements your multimedia experience with rich metadata optimized to enhance the wall. View shutter, aperture and ISO of Picasa Photos, see image size and source of Google images, view ratings and related videos on YouTube, and view more product descriptions in Shopping.

More information, more versatility, more Cooliris. What are you waiting for? Download version 1.10 here, or you’re missing half the experience!

“The Jump to Web functionality is what I really dug as I do so many presentations about the web, and going from something like powerpoint to the web and back is just awkward. My CoolIris presentation is accessed ON the web and I can access other web content seemlessly by using the right-more icon below the image…”

I recently came across this awesome blog post about using Cooliris as a presentation tool. We have built a Cooliris plug-in for Powerpoint a while ago, but this really takes it to a different level by integrating the flexibility of the web. It’s a great implementation with a detailed step-by-step of how he used the full featured method to enable his website and show off his presentation - I love it!

Hey everyone! My name is Robert and I’m the Lead Visual Designer here at Cooliris. I thought I’d take a few moments to tell you all about our new blog: The Watercooler.

Ever since we launched our website redesign last October, we’ve been working on creating a new blog. We wanted something that was more than just marketing tool, and we wanted something that appealed to more than people related to Cooliris.

When designing the new blog, I took cues from two of my favorite blogs, Daring Fireball and Boing Boing. Daring Fireball has two great entry styles, a linked list format, and then a more traditional long post. So we’re adding a Daring Fireball linked list style post to things that we find are interesting. The Linked List entries will be launching soon. Boing Boing has many distinct voices, so we’re inviting more members of the company to participate, so you’ll be able to get different perspectives from different people.

Light Switch

One thing we’ve noticed is that some of you guys have difficulty reading light text on a dark background. So by default we’ve designed our blog to be dark text on a light background, however if you’re like some of us and up at 3:00am, you can switch to light text on a dark background so you’ll be able to read the blog without hurting your eyes.

Linkage on the Left

Along with recent and popular posts, we’ve joined some of the top social networks so you can keep track of what we’re up to. If you’re on any of those networks, we’d love for you to friend us! We’ve also added links to our Media Kit, and Tell A Friend pages, so if you’re feeling compelled to spread the word of Cooliris, you can!

Comments

We always love to hear back from our friends. Drop us a line at blog@cooliris.com. Feel free to write to us about our posts, or if you’ve written about Cooliris or spotted it in the wild.
