San Francisco City Guide

Golden Gate

One of the most distinct and exciting cities in the United States, San Francisco has earned a reputation as a great cultural center. Plenty of the Cooliris team resides in San Francisco, including myself (I moved here a few months ago). So we’ve put together a list of our favorite San Francisco landmarks, restaurants and more. This list is not at all intended to be all-inclusive, but to give just a taste of what the city has to offer.

Whether night, day, dawn or dusk our favorite park in the city is Alamo Square which features one of the best views of San Francisco’s phenomenal skyline. This Halloween the Castro is the place to be as usual with its annual Halloween party. There is great coffee, none more hip than the local favorite Four Barrel Coffee in the Mission. Japantown boasts one of the city’s best theaters Sundance Kabuki which has incredible reclining seats.

No trip to San Francisco would be complete in my opinion without a trolley car ride and dinner and a show at Yoshi’s Jazz club. Lombard street is known for being the crookedest street in the world but is just as interesting at its straight points which run through the heart of the Marina neighborhood. If you are 21 and older and in the city on Thursday night then California Academy of Science’s weekly Nightlife event is the place to be. If you’re going to be in town soon make sure you check out a genuine San Francisco event like LoveFest (Sep. 29- Oct 3) or see a Giants game who are making an exciting push for the playoffs!

  • EPIC FAILS

It’s kind of awesome to laugh at another person’s EPIC FAIL. As long as you aren’t the one on the receiving end of pain and humiliation, a good giggle about someone else getting whacked in the face by a massive watermelon is okay, once in awhile. This new feature channel provides exactly that; a healthy once-in-awhile dose of  bad karma and hilarity.

Ever wondered what would happen if you dougie-ed in the middle of the street? Answer here. Ever wondered what would happen if you were a woman and tried to park your car? Answer here. Ever wondered what would happen if you were an elephant zoo-keeper person by profession? Answer here. Our new feature channel should answer many other queries of the like.

    Series of Fails

On another note, one of the cuter fails is this stuck sofa baby. My favorite part is the end when he says, “thanks for saving me!” To balance out this absurd amount of adorable, I have put in an intensely grotesque fail as well. Consider yourself warned. In the office, we fondly call it “Two Elephants, One Trunk.”

P.S. Feeling down in the dumps even after looking at this awesome channel? Is your life a fail? You may need to invest in this “Cheers to You” DVD. It worked for me!

  • Boy Bands & Girl Bands

According to Wikipedia, a boy-band is “a popular music act consisting of about 3-6 male performers. Despite the term “band”, boy band members usually do not play musical instruments, either in recording sessions or on stage, although exceptions do exist.” For some other entertaining definitions of boy bands, click here.

During the making of this new feature channel, I re-discovered some gems; from The Go-Go’s to The Monkees, and the Backstreet Boys to the Spice Girls.

After watching all these music videos, I realized how extremely hard it is to take a lot of these bands seriously. Take for example, “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys. The music video is absolutely ridiculous. Yes, it was the 90’s and yes, Halloween is a fun festival but WHAT were they thinking? Probably the same thing ‘N Sync was in these outfits.

Girl bands have similar flaws. In this video, Girls Aloud replace skimpy dresses for shiny red trash bags, accompanied by tragic dance moves. While most of the music videos in our new channel showcase fashion disasters, the catchy music that we can’t say Bye Bye Bye to is usually the saving grace. Don’t be deterred by the grainy videos and horrendous clothes because this channel will bring some mmmbop back into your life.

Another astute observation made is the frequency and lack of variety of hand motions used by the majority of boy bands. The index finger pointing up to the sky, and the flat palm on the chest are two of the most popular. They are both wonderfully captured in this video.

While I seem to be hating on a lot of these bands, I will shamelessly admit that I was one of those lovestruck, Nick Carter crazed teenyboppers. I also may or may not have choreographed entire dances to various All Saints songs.

P.S I know that you know many of the lyrics to most of these songs, and therefore I have inserted a Karaoke-sing-along version of “Seasons in the Sun” by Westlife, for your singing pleasure!

  • MEOWZ

    OH HAI !

Today we iz having a brand newz feature channel with awezum cat videos, and lolcatz ! ‘Lolspeak’ is already invading Cooliris work emailz now that the channel is live! In fact, the halls are abuzz with “Mean Kitty,” a catchy cat song made by a creepy dude with a great voice. Okay, so what if it’s only me singing it—Little bitty kitty want to bite bite bite!

Apart from cat tunes, we have some adorable kittens, as well as some really silly cats. One of my favorites is a legendary montage of primarily baby-mauling and ceiling fan swinging cats and kitties. For the faint-hearted, perhaps go with this more innocuous video!

This collection will warm the hearts of Vampire Haters, Justin Bieber fans, Engineers, Foodies, Ninjas and Drunk people.

If you are feeling inspired, you can even “Make your own LOLZ.” Pick from a large selection of kitty and dog photos and create your own captions that get voted on. If your lolcat is popular, it makes it to the icanhascheezburger homepage!

O RLY? You like dogz? For the dog lovers, we have the cutest whistling puppy and overturned puppy videos. Also, this dog dances better than many men I have met. Take notes!

  • Dangerously Funny: Remi Gaillard

If you haven’t already heard of Remi Gaillard, you need to watch our new feature channel ASAP! Remi is a crazy french guy who produces and creates what he calls “dangerously funny” videos. After watching them myself, I realized that he actually means “hysterical and exceptionally obnoxious” videos.

Here is a prime example: Remi dresses up in a Kangaroo suit, does a series of nonsensical things, and finally mid-hop, kicks an unsuspecting golfer into a pond. Instead of chasing Remi down with a raging golf club, the golfer proceeds to drag himself out of the pond, drop his club, and brisk-walk towards the already skipping away Joey. Perhaps this inaction can be attributed to the shock of being assaulted by a giant velor kangaroo.

However, golfer karma does kick in when Remi gets whacked with a golf club by a peeved bystander in a later video where he pulls the PAC-MAN prank.

Remi justifies his actions by his life motto “C’est en faisant n’importe quoi qu’on devient n’importe qui” or “It’s by doing whatever that you become whoever.” He does become whoever he wants, especially when it comes to professional athletes. He has a series of Sports Impostor videos, where he manages to fake being a part of several sports teams. In one of them, he pretends to be a football player in the 2002 Coupe de France finals. He takes part in the winning celebrations, holds the trophy, smiles brightly in team photos, provides autographs, and is even congratulated by the then president of France, Jacques Chirac.

One of my personal favorites is this one. I can’t say anymore or I will give it away, and nobody likes a spoiler. Do yourself a favor and check him out!
