A Note to Mac OS X 10.4 and PowerPC Mac Users

Many of you have been asking about what the deal is with support for Mac OS X 10.4 and PowerPC Macs. Unfortunately, with Cooliris version 1.11.3, we are no longer supporting these configurations due to the multitude of new operating systems and configurations that we are supporting.

Because of this, unfortunately, some of you may have already upgraded to 1.11.3 and noticed that Cooliris has disappeared from your browser!

Here is a table that will help you find which Cooliris version we recommend that you use with your configuration:

All downloads for previous versions are listed in our release notes. Because these are older versions, performance may not be optimal, so we do recommend an upgrade to a supported system if you want the full Cooliris experience.

Thanks for your support and understanding!

That’s goofy behavior. Don’t let us install it on an unsupported OS; certainly MacOS .pkg lets you check before pulling the trigger.

For some time, I’ve viewed YouTube videos in my cooliris window on my Firefox browser with no problems. For the last couple of upgrades, cooliris tells me flash is not supported. No videos, even though I can watch YouTube via Firefox and Safari with no problems. I somehow imagine many people are having this problem. I am registered with cooliris, and this may not be the proper place to report this problem, but I’ve been away for a while, and this is the first chance I’ve had. I’ve enjoyed the cooliris display and experience, but don’t relish the thought of having to install another media player, when YouTube works fine with my Firefox media, with RealPlayer, with my Safari browser, even with VLC. What gives? Thank you for listening.

I have a MacOX.10 G5. After following your prompt to to update, I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why it didn’t work (thanks so much for the warning).
I wasted hours trying to find them old versilon from third parties, many of whom had the false claim the new version is for 10.4 and up, and some of whom did not have working versions of the old versions when downloaded.
Your versions (on your “release notes” page) didn’t show up in a Google search for some reason.
So finally I stumbled on this page, and found your previous versions. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!
Here’s a concept: instead of calling your previous versions page the vague “release notes” (which implies NOTES, not VERSIONS!!!), why not call it “previous versions”(!) or “all versions”(!)
      Too simple?!!
Or you might just incorporate a *#@!!* search engine on your site.
I know I’m not the only one having this wonderfully frustrating and needlessly time-wasting experience.
(OMIGOD! NOW I’ve wasted another 10 minutes typing this cathartic reply!)
      Get it together, people!

[...] The system requirements made me sad however – I wish I had known that getting a Mac mini without an Intel chip would render me on the wrong side of the digital divide. Update: Previous versions (tho unsupported) are available. [...]

    5. Frank Says:

Wow I can’t believe I was able to update it on a unsupported OS!!!! Now I have to figure out how to downgrade!!! Thanks for making my night a little longer!!!

      Hi JJ Barney,
So sorry that we missed your comment. Sorry for all the confusion – we are definitely going to be more conscientious about auto-updating older versions. I’ll pass along your feedback about searching for older releases, and hopefully we can make something happen! Thanks for your patience and understanding.

It is bad sad that a 2 or 3 years old computer is considered as a useless thing not to be supported anymore. I upgrade systematically when I get update messages. Firefox and Cooliris ; no message nowhere that Cooliris is not supported anymore on a OS X – PPC. After having updated Firefox to 3.5.4, NO Cooliris anymore. This is really sad and NO, I DO NOT understand this!!!! Who can tell me what to do now? Should I downgrade either Firefox or Cooliris and undermine internet security of my machine. Cooliris was a very useful tool to me and now it is over. Thanks a lot!!! Really not nice!!!

    8. Robyn Says:

I’m weeping with frustration. I was one of your most admiring users of early versions of Cooliris. I upgraded when advised to. It didn’t work. And I lost my old version. I have a Mac PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11 and Firefox 3.5.4

Is there anything I can do?

    9. Ferdi Says:

      Dear Robyn,
I found an intermediate solution! I left my Firefox 3.5.4 in it’s place, then downloaded Firefox old version 3.0.15 and installed it besides my latest Firefox-version in the Applications-folder. Then
I downloaded the advised CoolIris for old systems (Version 1.11.1.26925 (07/06/2009))from the hereabove mentioned “releasenotes-page” with the newest Firefox OFF and the OLD Firefox-version ON and it downloaded and installed correctly and: it worked!! To my great surprise, after putting off the old Firefox version and putting ON my Firefox 3.5.4 Cooliris works on this version (3.5.4)! I bet that the Cooliris-technicians do not know this… You can leave the old Firefox-version besides your newest version in your Applications-folder, without using it… it seems to support Cooliris for you in your old system and that is what counts..! I hope the nightly hours I spent to find this solution may benefit to many others like you Robyn!

    10. ambi Says:

how the hell and from where do you download Version 1.11.1.26925 ?
The release notes page shows only “release notes” and no download links to previous versions
      I am running safari 4.0.3 on OS X 10.4.11

    11. Ferdi Says:

      Ambi,
on the page “releasenotes” (the blue link here above the comments), you will see “Version 1.11.1.26925 (07/06/2009) Windows FF3 | Mac FF3 | Linux 32-bit 64-bit”…
Behind Mac “FF3″ is in blue; that’s the download link. Should work! Good luck!

    12. Unco Says:

I am running MacOsX.5.8 and Safari 4.0.4 on my G4 PPC Powerbook. Since Cooliris also disappeared from my browser, I downgraded. Alas it does not work. Cooliris1.10 keeps on loading but nothing happens, while Cooliris 1.11.1 says that it is unable to find the needed plugin (although it seems to me that all components are in the correct folder).
So is Cooliris lost for me?

    13. Unco Says:

In my previous post I wrote that, even after downgrading to version 1.11.1, Cooliris was not working on my Safari. In the mean time I managed to solve the problem. I guess that the newer version left a plug-in called “CoolirisWebKitPlugin.plugin” in my users/library/internet plug-in folder. After deleting that one, Cooliris was operational again.
Hope this is useful to others.

    14. Terrance Says:

This is ridiculous. In order to use your plugin, I’d now have to uninstall Firefox 3.5 and install an older version. I guess I’ll have to look for alternatives, since I’m not planning to buy a new computer anytime soon.

Cooliris only works on my iPhone. For now.

    15. ambi Says:

argh ! on release notes page, click safari and then you see the packages for safari. I am the only one who took so long to figure it out ? hahahaha

    16. Lara Daghistany Says:

I have the icon of the Cooliris on my browser but I cant run it it tells me that (The page “Cooliris” has content of MIME type “application/x-cooliris-embedded”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed.)
what can I do and what is the problem???
      please help me…

    17. Carsten Says:

It’s totally sh*t! I want the newest Cooliris but it’s not possible because of unsupported PPC. Now Firefox is nagging me everytime I use it, that I should update the addon. Could you at least please disable the Update notification for unsupported systems?
