  • Gooooaaaal! Cooliris Soccer Showdown

In a breathtaking display of athleticism and mental toughness, the Cooliris Peninsula team defeated the Cooliris San Francisco team by a score of 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the Cooliris Soccer match.

Cooliris viking soccerVersatile striker Kelton Lynn, one of the guys who bring you all the TV episodes in Cooliris, drew first blood for the hosts with a powerful first-half strike before fleet-footed midfielder Wayne Greenwood, UI designer and guitarist extraordinaire, clinically tapped in a second to put the game out of reach. Greenwood even contributed brilliantly on the defensive end, diving majestically to prevent San Francisco captain Tom Montgomery (um, a former starter on the Men’s Soccer team at Stanford University) from finding the net.

San Francisco’s Daniel K-Dan Kaemmerer, as lethal with a soccer ball as he is in eliminating bugs, took advantage of a blunder by bug tester-turned-goalkeeper Calen Ipalook to pull one back mid-way through the second half, but the staunch defending of the Peninsula squad proved to be too much. The San Francisco side was also haunted by a severe lack of ball control; recruiter Katie Lampe took a well-struck ball off the side of her head, a ball which had been kicked by one of her very own teammates. Yep, it was just one of those days for the San Franciscans.

The two sides played each other evenly throughout the entire contest, but it was the tactical approach of the Peninsula team that gave them the edge.

Using an age-old strategy known as turtling, the hosts pulled nearly all of their players back to defend at the slightest hint of danger and would only occasionally maraud into opposing territory. However, they took full advantage of their counterattacking opportunities to slip their two goals past Icelandic national team goalkeeper Brian Truebe. The San Francisco strategy of have Truebe intentionally knock over the goal any time they’re about to score was quickly sniffed out and disallowed by referee and Business Development intern Rob Balian.

Once the final whistle had been blown, all combatants convened joyously around delicious burgers and watermelon. More sporting spectacles between the two sides are most certainly on the horizon; the San Francisco team can content themselves with the fact that they’ll get another shot at their Peninsula counterparts sooner rather than later!

  • Staff Soccer Game

Happy Friday, everyone! The end of the week always brings with it some interesting things at Cooliris. We celebrated a pair of birthdays yesterday, so we’ve decided to hold a staff soccer match today to allow us to run off all the cake we ate while partying. As such, the Cooliris staff has been divided into two formidable teams: the San Francisco team and the Peninsula team.

On paper, the Peninsula team looks to be the stronger side. Featuring the majority of the staff, the Peninsula squad boasts a midfield hydra of User Growth guru Matt Cano, Business Development ninja Rob Balian, and Bug Squasher Calen Ipalook, as well as intimidating (read: 6-foot-5) target-man Josh Schwarzapel. Truthfully, the team seems to have no weaknesses at all.

The San Francisco side is certainly not without hope, however. Captained by Tom Montgomery, a former Stanford player, the team has a strong core of competitors such as tenacious defender Maria Ignatova and midfield maestro Brian Truebe. San Francisco also has no shortage of offensive weapons; striker Katie Lampe, a former diver, has been known to swan dive gracefully at the faintest of contact in the opposing box, winning many penalty kicks for her team. The Peninsula defenders will certainly have to be on their guard.

We’re still hours away from kickoff, but pregame preparation has already begun around the office. Left and right, cleats are being polished and knee-high socks are being ironed. No matter the outcome, it should be quite a feast of football. Err, soccer. We’ll have all the photos and highlights for you on Monday!

  • The Italian Job: Beckham’s Brouhaha

At Cooliris, we’re all about bringing you great content and great finds. Something that piqued my interest lately is the controversy surrounding David Beckham and his return to Major League Soccer.

It’s tough to be a soccer fan in a country like the US. Americans have so many other sports to worry about that the beautiful game often takes a backseat. Still, many were very excited when Beckham made his switch over to MLS last year. How could Beckham, with kicks of the ball like the one in this video, possibly not bring more popularity to soccer?

Well, by attracting tremendous interest from European teams, that’s how. Italian powerhouse AC Milan, recognizing that Beckham still had what it takes to play in the ultra-competitive Italian league, persuaded Beckham’s team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, to loan him to Europe on the condition that he would come back to the States once Milan’s season was done. Sketchy? Perhaps. But everyone, including the Galaxy, agreed on the deal.

Much to LA’s chagrin, however, Beckham voiced interest in making his European move permanent after playing brilliantly in Italy. But in the end, he had to honor his contract and return to the US.  In his first game back this past Sunday, he was greeted by a chorus of boos that stayed with him throughout the game.

It’s tough to pass judgment on Becks’ situation. On the one hand, there are strong hints of disloyalty to the Galaxy. On the other hand, can you really blame the guy for wanting to play closer to his native England, and in a more competitive league? Difficult to say. But no matter which way you slice it, the notion of Beckham pulling soccer from out of the shadow of other American sports seems less and less likely.

Obviously it pains most soccer fans to see this experiment go down in flames. But that’s why we can take solace in watching the Beckham of old do his thing, back before any of this silly drama even existed! Have a look at this 3D Wall of some of Becks’ most magical strikes of the ball. Poetry in motion.

¦And let’s hope that none of those boo-birds show up to our Cooliris staff soccer game on Friday!

  • Happy Moon Day!

For those who don’t know, 40 years ago on this very day the Apollo 11 spacecraft touched down on the moon and Neil Armstrong emerged to become the first man to walk on its surface. It certainly has been quite some time since it happened, but it’s still pretty darn amazing to think about. The moon is something that has been gazed at and hypothesized about ever since the very beginning of humanity, and today was the day we finally came in physical contact with it. Awesome stuff!

Moon Day certainly carries some symbolic importance as well. The first lunar landing epitomizes mankind’s curiosity to explore the universe and discover new things. As cheesy as it may sound, we here at Cooliris take special meaning out of this curiosity, as we consider ourselves to be pioneers in our own way. We’re all about improvement, innovation, and reaching for the stars, only our new world of exploration is the web.

Take some time to reflect on the incredible events that took place on this day, and be sure to stare off into space for a little while tonight! And check out this 3D Wall of the landing to bring the day to life. Happy Moon Day, everyone!
